McSweeney, 117, saves Shell XI
PA Napier Batting practice became the prime objective of the West Indies and the Shell XI in Napier yesterday, with the former New Zealand wicketkeeper, Ervin McSweeney, scoring the three-day game’s fourth century. McSweeney logged only his second first-class century to guide his team through to 348 for eight declared in reply to the West Indies’ first innings of 433 for six declared.
When stumps were drawn a half hour early on the final day, the tourists were 105 for one in their second innings with the opening batsmen, Thelston Payne (51) and Richie Richardson (50 not but), a first innings cen-tury-maker along with his captain and Desmond Haynes, benefiting from time out in the middle. McSweeney’s 117 not out, the highlight of the final day, was responsible for helping the Shell side
avoid an embarrassing follow-on. Along with Martin Snedden’s 60. it gave the innings a good degree of respectability. WEST INDIES First innings 433/6 dec. Second innings T. Payne b Ritchie 51 R.
