Support for Noble Times in $40,000 Grangewilliam Stakes today

Special correspondent New Plymouth

Local support will be with Noble Times when she contests the $40,000 Grangewilliam Stakes at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting at New Plymouth today. A group three event, the Grangewilliam Stakes has been won by a number of outstanding young horses over the years, including Kingdom Bay, Mister Aythorpe and Seadreamer. The field for today’s encounter does not lack in quality, with a strong line-up of the best two-year-olds. Noble Times is making her final New Zealand appearance in the Taranaki feature before contesting the $1 million Golden Slipper Stakes in Sydney next month.

She races for the first time today in the interests of her United States owners, who will be hoping for better luck than they received with Scotch and Dry on the day of last year’s Grangewilliam. After receiving no luck in the running the filly had to be content with seventh.

Despite being owned by overseas people, the New Plymouth crowd will treat Noble Times as one of their own. After all she is still trained on the course by Gary Viel. The Drums of Time filly has swept nearly all before her this season. She has won four of her five races. Her most recent race was almost a month ago, in the Matamata Breeder’s Stakes, where she annihilated an outstanding field. She races better when kept on the fresh side so should be at peak today. Heavenly View will defend an unbeaten record if she contests the Grangewilliam. She has had to overcome a hoof injury and is not a definite starter.

However, if she does take her place in the field she must rate as the one for Noble Times to beat. Touch of Silver could be one to surprise the hot-pots. She was impressive in winning at Woodville on February 14 and, without much doubt, she has the ability to test her rivals.
