Riccarton and St Albans women’s winners
Riccarton and St Albans were winners of the 60-over matches in the senior women’s cricket competition on Saturday. The individual batting highlight was an accomplished 88 by Kirsty Bond (St Albans), who was in superb touch. Batting first against Riccarton, Lancaster Park was given a fine start by the openers, Jenny Olson and Penny Kinsella, who put on 96 for the first wicket.
Once this partnership was broken, however, Park continued to lose quick wickets adding just another 35 while six wickets fell. For Riccarton, Pua Tuitape and Gail Heather were very frugal in their conversion of runs.
In reply, Riccarton seemed to have the task well in hand, scoring 100 off 38 overs with some attractive stroke play by Deborah Ford and Heather. However, in the later stages. Park tightened its bowling attack and fielded with commitment so that it was not until the penultimate over that Riccarton reached its target. At Sydenham Park, St Albans reached 191 for six in its 60 overs. Ann McKenna and Bond dominated the batting crease, both driving stylishly in scoring 45 and 88, respectively. It was Bond’s best club innings and augurs well for the national under 20 final in three weeks in which Bond will captain Canterbury against Taranaki. The best of the Sydenham bowlers was Andrea Devine with two for 29 off 12 overs. Requiring three runs an over, Sydenham found the pressure too great and was dismissed for 77 in the fortysecond over. In an accurate bowling spell, Brigit Legg captured three for five and Catherine Campbell took another fivewicket bag to take her tally to 49 for the season.
