Life prison term for a confessed spy
By
JAMES VICINI,
Reuters (through NZPA) Washington A United States judge has sentenced a confessed spy, Jonathan Pollard, to the maximum penalty of life in prison for passing military secrets to Israel in a case that has severely strained diplorfiatic relations. Judge Robinsofi... . rejected pleas of mercy' yesterday for Pollard, aged 32, a former United States Navy intelligence analyst, and his wife, who was
implicated in the affair.
Anne Henderson-Pol-lard, aged 26, was sentenced to two five-year prison terms to be served concurrently for possession of embezzled United States Government documents and for being an accessory. As the sentence for her husband was announced, she fell to the floor, weeping, and shouted, “No.” Pollard, pale but impassive, helped his wife back to her feet while she continued sobbing.
Prosecutors asked for a
long prison sentence, but agreed not to seek a life term fn return for Pollard’s co-op. The Judge imposed it anyway.
Prosecutors and the Defence Secretary, Caspar Weinberger, described the Pollard spy ring as one of the most serious breaches of security in United States history.
“He’s a very dangerous man,” an Assistant United States Attorney, Charles Leeper, said at a threehour court hearing before sentencing.
