Industrial harmony

Sir,—Congratulations to Mr L. Dennison of Moral Rearmament for finding a way to improve his personal life (February 26). However, to say that personal change can revolutionise industrial relations flies in the face of at least 200 years of socialist struggle and numerous revolutions which, instead, are based on the principle that it is society’s socio-economic organisation which influences personal values and relationships. Even in the economic boom of the 1960 s the proliferation of movements based on similar principles to those of Mr Dennison did not produce-the age of Aquarius. Mr Dennison might find it hard to convince New Zealanders facing falling living standards and unemployment that a change in their values is all that is needed for survival in this competitive economic system where workers are forced to compete for jobs. Labour’s 1984 consensus conference was based on honesty and unselfishness and look where it got us. — Yours, etc.,

S. G. YORKE. February 26, 1987
