Becoming oriented

Orientation festival begins tomorrow for students at the University of Canterbury, and its advantage is that it gives the public a chance to see some of the visiting acts who also play at other venues in Christchurch.

Topping the bill is Billy Bragg, the British singer/ songwriter, who will play one show at the Students’ Association ballroom at Ham on March 6, after playing at the Carlton Hotel the previous evening.

Peking Man, the Back Door Blues Band, and Everything That Flies are other acts that will play at orientation as well as at other venues in Christchurch.

The evening programme opens tomorrow with All Fall Down, the Greens, and Ahika (formerly the Christchurch band, Horizin) at the ballroom, and Bill Direen and Ron Bastard at the upper commonroom. Luke Hurley can be found in the cafe.

Saturday: Verve, Peking Man at the ballroom.

Sunday: The new JeanPaul Sartre Experience, Paras, and The Bats at the ballroom.

Monday, March 2: Kiwi Zoo, DB and B, and Aotearoa, ballroom. Tuesday, March 3: Cassandra’s Ears, Ebony Sye, Everything That Flies, ballroom.

Wednesday, March 4: Big Elvis, Back Door Blues Band, ballroom. Taranaki Sol, Ged Maybury, upper commonroom.

Friday, March 6: The Overdream, Nick Smith, Billy Bragg, ballroom. The Corbetts comedy act, lower commonroom.

Saturday, March 7: Verlaines, Sneaky Feelings, ballroom, Helen Mulholland, Peter Crawley, cafe.

To get into the university’s orientation festival, each person must have an orientation ticket and there must be one student i.d. per couple.
