Pensioner survives in shaft

An 85-year-old patient who fell down a hospital service shaft after wandering from his ward bed last week has been discovered alive, but gryThe police called off a search of the area around the Portsmouth hospital last week-end and the missing pensioner, who disappeared on Thursday night, was given up for dead. But William Portman, wearing only nightclothes, was discovered on Tuesday when a contractor working in the basement heard groans coming from the service shaft.
He was dragged to safety, suffering back injuries, cuts and bruises, dehydration and hunger.
