Workers advised to refuse redundancies

Workers at the Christchurch Toyota plant would be advised not to accept voluntary redundancies, said the assistant secretary of the Canterbury Engineers’ Union, Mr Jed O’Connell, last evening.

Mr O’Connell visited the plant yesterday afternoon for talks with the management. He later called for further talks on the plant’s future.

Engineers and coachbuilders are affected and also clerical workers, cleaners, and other servicing staff.

“We believe that the company should enter into proper, rational discussions on the future of the plant,” Mr O’Connell said. “We are opposed to the method of calling for voluntary redundancies, which disregards award provisions.

“The union will advise members to work through this thing rather than accepting voluntary redundancy. I am disappointed with the company’s method. It tried a similar step four or five years ago and caused unnecessary problems.”

He planned to hold a meeting of workers at 10 a.m. today to discuss the situation.
