Cory keeps cheaper palace
NZPA-Reuter Manila A frugal Philippines President, Corazon Aquino, spent less in her first 10 months in office than Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos spent in their last eight weeks in Malacanang Palace, an official said yesterday.
The Finance Assistant, Jesus Calleja, said that in
contrast to the $15.7 million spent by the Marcoses in January and February, 1986, to run the presidential palace and office, Mrs Aquino’s office had spent $l4 million from March to December. Mr Calleja said the Marcoses spent $3O million in the corresponding 10-month period in 1985.
Mrs Aquina turned the
imposing 200-year-old Malacanang, built by the Philippines’ Spanish colonial rulers, into a musuem after she took power. Her office is in a palace guesthouse. Mr Calleja’s report said the Aquino Government could have spent less money if it did not have to settle outstanding water and power bills left by the Marcoses.
