Trust to examine tower’s impact
The Canterbury regional committee of the Historic Places Trust will examine the impact of the proposed 167 m-high, 20M tower on Victoria Square. The development was discussed yesterday during a committee meeting. A committee member, Dr lan Lochhead, said there were a number of opinions.
“While we don’t see this as an issue in which we would take either a blanket opposition to or support for, the essential question is what effect the tower would have on the square’s historic integrity,” Dr Lochhead said. “The square has been an open area since the city’s foundation. The committee will need to assess what effect the tower will have towards compromising that.”
“If it feels that it has a position to express, it could become involved in future hearings, if and when they are held.”
