Scheme unlikely to affect 1988 enrolment

The 1988 intake of third-formers into Christchurch secondary schools is unlikely to be affected if a new enrolment scheme is adopted, says the chairman of the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council, Mr Bruce Jamieson. The new scheme was discussed by the council on Tuesday evening. Mr Jamieson said that because of the consultation that must be done it was "extremely unlikely” it could be in place for enrolments later this year.

Copies of the scheme, which was the most favoured of three studied by a working party, will now be sent to schools’ boards of governors to discuss. It

will also be sent to those who made submissions to the working party. Once a response from those groups had been received, the council would discuss the scheme in more detail, Mr Jamieson said. It would then have to discuss it with Education Department planners. “It is important that parents and children affected be given considerable warning,” he said. “For those reasons, the system for enrolling 1988 third-formers will be the current one, with only minor adjustments.” The people most likely to be affected, if the scheme was adopted, would be the 1989 intake of third-formers, he said.
