Too many sports envoys— Mr Moore

PA Auckland The Minister of Recreation and Sport, Mr Moore, conceded yesterday that too many people had been appointed sports ambassadors. At the first Auckland meeting of the Hillary Commission for Recreation and Sport he said he would impose a limit. "I have let too many go," he said. "I think we ought to cut it down to five a year ...” Since late 1984, when he started the programme for cultural and sports ambassadors, Mr Moore has named at least 21

sports people, the racehorse, Bonecrusher, and two round-the-world yachts. Mr Moore said that the various sports ambassadors had submitted their itineraries while travelling so that the Government could notify business and trade organisations. The impact, however, had been limited. “For the first time we gave money to sports people and asked them for something back.” Many of the sports ambassadors received $5OOO from the Government as part of their award.
