Chinese clean sweep
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi China gained a measure of revenge yesterday by sweeping South Korea to win the women’s team event at the world table tennis championships for a record seventh successive time. Spurred on by flag-wav-ing supporters singing patriotic songs, the two Asian sports giants struggled for more than two hours and 10 minutes before China emerged
with a 3-0 win over the team which upset it at the Asian Games in Seoul last year. ’ In an earlier tie, North Korea clinched third place in the men’s team event, routing Yugoslavia, 5-1. Hungary, spearheaded by its European women’s singles champion. Csilla Batorfl, finished third in the women’s team event with a 3-1 win over the Netherlands.
