Manukau has ‘gateway’ plan
A big new development propossal for municipal land adjoining the Manukau City Centre could create a gateway for international travellers to New Zealand in time for the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
The $B5 million proposal — which will be on the proposed monorail link with the Games village and Auckland International Airport — envisages airport check-in and duty free facilities on the site along with hotel and office accommodation, banks, restaurants, shops, three cinemas and parking. Dubbed “The Gateway Centre” by its joint-ven-ture backers, listed property developer Mayfair Corporation, Ltd, and a private company, Professional Properties, Ltd, the
proposal was submitted to the Manukau City Council yesterday. The complex is eh- £ visaged to cover about 1.5 hectares of vacant land on . two adacent sites in the " centre of Manukau City — one on the corner of Rowwood and Davies Avenues and one on the corner if . Amersham and Osterfey . Ways. It has been »W/.' signed as a single large three-level podium with triple towers, interlinked by an overhead walkway >.. to the Manukau City Centre. Other features would include a 150-room hotel, a monorail station to link It ' £ with Auckland airport, underground parking for 1500 cars, and conference facilities for up to 2000 people.
