Plan to limit pay rises welcomed
PA Wellington The Government’s plan to limit pay rises for top public servants to 10 per cent was a first step to economic common sense, said the leader of the Democratic Party, Mr Neil Morrison. “It is a major admission that either the free-mar-ket doesn’t work, or that Labour doesn’t want it to,” he said. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said legislation was introduced in Parlia-
ment allowing the Higher Salaries Commission to grant only pay rises of not more than 10 per cent. The limit will apply until April 1, 1988. Mr Morrison said the decision to legislate showed Labour’s “repeated claim that its ‘tight’ monetary policy would limit pay rises to be so much mush.” "The Democrats welcome this first step back to economic common sense — it is overdue.”
