Retirement age
Sir,—“Compulsory retirement ages should be scrapped,” says Dr G. Davison (February 18). His attitude, although fair to the elderly, does not go far towards helping the young unemployed seeking work. In a country with relatively high unemployment, particularly amongst the young, I think it only fitting that those of us who have enjoyed a life with employment should stand down to make way for a generation less fortunate in that respect. His comments relating to Dr G. Wall — “politicians can often do a better job when they are older because they are wiser” — seems very far from the mark when you consider that these very same politicians are supposed to be taking an ethical stance to encourage others. Dr Davison is a geriatrician. Do we have comparable medical consultants to help youngsters cope with a future devoid of prospects and fraught with stress? — Yours, etc., D. A. JARVIS. February 18, 1987.
