Grammy Awards

The winners of this year’s Grammy Awards—the highest accolades in the recording music field—will be announced tonight from 739 on Two.

The ceremony was held earlier today at Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium, with actor-come-dian Billy Crystal in the role of host. Helping him do the honours was an all-star roster of performers and presenters, including The Bangles, Bob Geldof, Herbie Hancock, Whitney Houston, B. B. King, Olivia New-

ton-Jehn, Robert Palmer, Paul Simon and Bruce Willis.

The singer-songwriter Steve Winwood led the field with five nominations including ones in both Record and Album of the Year categories. The singer-songwriters Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon each received four nominations, as did the instrumentalist Wynton Marsalis and the classical record producer Thomas Frost

Nominations were made through the secret balloting of the members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), all of whom are actively involved in the recording field. This year, nominations were distributed among 119 different record labels, the highest number in the 29 years of Grammy history.
