Jail for burning house
PA Palmerston North A man has been jailed for two years for burning down a State house in Huntly. David Keith Blackley, aged 26, unemployed, appeared for sentence in the High Court at Palmerston North. He had earlier admitted a charge of arson.
Counsel, Fergus Steedman, said that on January 3 Blackley set fire to the house after sprinkling paint thinners around it. He said Blackley confessed the arson to Palmerston North police later in January because he “felt bad, stupid and full of remorse.” Mr Justice Jeffries told Blackley a jail term was unavoidable because of his “extensive” list of previous offences. “This was an incredibly stupid thing to do as well as a criminal offence.”
