Obituary Sister Patricia Carew
Greymouth reporter Sister Mary Patricia Carew, a member of the community of Sisters of Mercy for more than 70 years, died in Timaru at the week-end. At various stages of her career, Sister Patricia was Reverend Mother of the convents at Greymouth and Christchurch. Born in Tipperary, Ireland, in 1898 Sister
Patricia with her late sister travelled to New Zealand to join the Mercy Convent in Greymouth at the time of World War I, and while her uncle, the late Dean Carew, S.M., was parish priest of Greymouth. Sister Mary Patricia and her sister Sister Mary Joseph were both professed at greymouth before Dean Carew in 1917.
Both taught at Greymouth for many years before moving to other convents. In Greymouth she and other nuns went out into the community nursing the victims of the influenza epidemic at the end of the World War I. For her services to the community over many years, she was the recipient of a special Greymouth Borough award.
