By

ROD DEW

Four international track and field coaches will conduct clinics in Christchurch today and tomorrow as a preliminary to an Oceania coaching course in Wellington. They are Doug Clement, a Canadian national distance coach, his wife, Diane Clement, who is a former Olympic sprinter, Brent McFarland, a Canadian national hurdles coach, and Merv Kemp, who is the throwing coach at the Australian Institute of Sport. The coaches, who have been brought to Christ-

church by the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Athletic Association, will hold a meeting for coaches at St Andrew’s College this evening. Tomorrow they face a programme of several clinics for school athletes at St Andrew’s College and a discussion with primary and secondary school teachers. In the evening, they will work with the Canterbury track and field development squad at the University of Canterbury’s Ham track. Mr Clement represented Canada in the 400 m and 800 m at the

1952 and 1956 Olympic Games, and was a silver medallist at the 1954 Commonwealth Games.

• Nine additions have been made to the Canterbury athletic development squad. They are Ainsley Dwight (sprints), Manuela Kenel (high jump), Ralph Brunie (sprints and long jump), Paul Fuller (sprints), Michael Hanning (sprints), Duane Humfreys (steeples and distance), Richard Lindroos (distance), Thomas Patton (jumps), and Marcus Stewart (javelin). The squad now numbers 11 young women, and 19 young men.
