Southlander wins main event at showgrounds

A Southland rider, Bruce Anderson, and Cardiff Hill won the mum event at the A. and P. Show Grounds last Sunday. Cardiff HUI jumped two rounds without fault to ■win the Victor Ludnnnn for A and B grade horses, part of ■the Bayer Rintal points prize. Jasmine, ridden by Sue Topp. and Helen Ensor from Blenheim riding Lute Song also jumped a double clear. A jump-off was required in this competition, and Cardiff Hill nudged in io win with a time trf 43.fis. Jasmine was nest with 45.55, and Lute Song finished in third place with a time of 46.3 s from Silent Partner, Ernie Mite, J J., Samuel and Banes Gift

In the A and B grade pony championship competition, which is part of the national points prize, Shirley Topp, riding Kirkwood Fanlight went clear in the first round and had the fastest time in the jump-off of 41.75.

On her heels in second place was Debbie Henderson, riding Phantom, from Southland who also jumped clear to finish in a time of 41.75. Third was Coco, also clear, ridden by Trish Ford, in a time of 43.15.

In the novice grade $lOOO classic competition there were six clear rounds, with two Ashburton riders taking the top placings. They were Janine Burton, riding Pexcator, with a time of 54.65, and Amanda Prosser, on Rampart, in 59.75.

Ann Price, from Southland, riding Thorovari, had four faults and finished with a fast

time of 50.75. In the C grade $lOOO classic, Ziggles, ridden by W. Rutherford, rode two clear rounds to win in 34.75. Second was Rachel Burt, also clear, riding Alchemy, finishing in 3555; Angela Lawler, from Southland, riding Magnmn finished third The Foxhunier competition for novice grade horses also produced some good jumping, with 21 clear rounds.

Lancaster, ridden by Clare Honeywell, from Southland, jumped clear to win in the time of 40.7 s Chris Harris, on Jolly Poacher, was second in 40.9 s and Morwena Power, riding Rembrant, third on 42.45. In the novice and C grade championship there were 34 starters

Mandy Rutherford on Galway Dungarvan rode two ■dear rounds and scorched in to win in a very fast time of 28.25. Belinda Russell, riding Jontin, finished clear in second place with a time of 31.95, and Kirsty Rutherford, riding Gypeta, also jumped dear and finished in 32.95. In the ride and drive contest, J, Spark, riding Stratus, won with a time of 6D.3s from Cardiff Hill, 63.15, and Bonnes Gift, 64.65.

In the lightweight working hunter. Morgan, ridden by lan Bell from Rakaia, won from Angela Lawler, from Southland, riding Heritage, and Grey Appro, ridden byMickle Dailey. In the heavyweight working hunter, Clockwork, also ridden by Mickle Dailey, beat Silent Partner and Courtsman.

In the open hack event to qualify for the Horse of the Year contest in Levin next month. The TA B's over five .classes will be keenly contested with nine A and B grade hacks competing in the big F.E.I. event of the day. The hack entries Show an increase of 20, while the ponies are the same as last year. This is because the Canterbury area trials are on the same week-end. The association has invited Mr T. M. R. Masken. immediate past president of the R.A.S. to open the show, which will be graced by horse- drawn vehicles of the past.

Some judges and members of the committee will be in traditional costume. The courses will be built by Mrs Anne Hildyard, of Nelson, who will also conduct a jumping seminar on Friday.
