Fisherman lost off Wgtn coast
PA Wellington A Wellington man is lost, presumed drowned, after his fishing boat was found drifting v ®ith the engine running early yesterday east of the. entrance to Wellington Harbour.
It was found on a calm sea about a mile south of Turakirae Head. A search involving two helicopters, ground parties, and 10 boats failed to find the man.
The search was called off late yesterday when hopes of finding him alive deteriorated. A police party will search the Turakirae Head-Cape Palliser shore early today. The lost man is Graham Newman, aged 35, an experienced commercial fisherman of Island Bay. He is married, with three children.
It was believed Mr Newman left in his 8m boat Waianawa about 4.30
a.m. in perfect conditions to check his crayfish pots in Palliser BayThree other fishing boats were working in the same area about the same time. Mr Newman was lqst seen on the deck of hS boat .soon after 8 a.m. by crew bf the boats. A crew member to another boat aiid a longtime friend of Mr Newman, Nunkio De Gregorio, said yesterday that crew in boats working in ' the area were alerted when they noticed his boat moving in wide cycles soon after 9 a.m. . A crew member got aboard the boat and discovered its skipper was missing. Mr De Gregorio said the engine was running and nothing looked out of place. The police said they believed Mr Newman might have become entangled in fishing gear while tending his pots and was pulled over the side.
