Ewe fair at Little River sound, if unspectacular
Romney two-tooth ewes at the Little River ewe fair yesterday met a sound, if unspectacular, demand from a cautious buying gallery of farmers.
Most good quality Romney two-tooths sold in a narrow range of $27 to $32 and looked good buying compared with top sales at the Oxford fair and recent Addington markets.
Limited buying power from outside the district contributed to the absence of price highlights for Romneys. The top Romney price of $32.75 was recorded twice, by J. E. Howden, of Port Levy, and D. 0. Masefield, of Goughs Bay. The highest price of the day was $3B for a pen of Cheviot-Romney cross twotooths from G. J. Foley, of Robinsons Bay. Coopworths from P. T. and M. T. Romneys saw only six of the 40 plus pens sell at less than $26 and 18 make $3O or more. Last year only one pen exceeded $3O. Other crossbred types including Perendales and Coopworths met a fluctuating demand. Occasional pens sold round $3O, but most prices were between $2O and $25.
The yarding of 6658 twotooths was an increase of 700 on last year’s total. Auction prices included:— Romneys Pyne, Gould, Guinness sold on account of: J. E.
