Cricket diplomacy succeeds

NZPA-Reuter New Delhi Pakistan’s President, Mohammad Zia ul-Haq, left for home yesterday after proclaiming that his “Peace Through Cricket” mission to India had succeeded in reducing tension between the two countries. The Press Trust of India news agency reported that General Zia had left Jaipur, where he watched a cricket match between India and Pakistan on Sunday.

General Zia arrived in New Delhi on Saturday and had talks with the Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, only a few days after the two nations pulled back 150,000 troops from battle positions along their border. The news agency quoted General Zia as saying that his visit had been successful.

“I am optimistic over the prospects for peace between the two countries,” he said.
