Power failure hits port, south Chch

Lyttelton came to a standstill for 45 minutes yesterday as a power failure hit much of south Christchurch. Cranes, radio-tele-phones and everything electrical were without power from just before 10 a.m. till 10.45 a.m. The failure, which covered Sumner, Redcliffs, Mount Pleasant, Lyttelton, and part of Heathcote, was caused by a contractor damaging a cable on Clifton Terrace, said the M.E.D.’s operations manager, Mr Jim Nicholls.

"We are not quite sure why it was so extensive. We suspect it was a faulty relay,” he said. Both the M.E.D. and the Lyttelton Borough Council received many calls from inquirers but no big problems were reported. Emergency generators were used to light the Port Hills tunnel and keep radio communications open between harbour authorities and moving vessels. There were no traffic lights in the affected areas to cause motoring problems.
