French windsurfer too fast for rivals

The world's top speed windsurfer, Pascal Maka, has taken the honours at the

Kuhtze Lager Windsurfing Record attempt at Glenorchy, near Queenstown.

The 30-year-old Frenchman’s top speed of 38.08 knots was just inside his world record of 38.86 knots,

set last year in the Omary Islands. Speeds at the event have yet to be ratified, but Maka said that if the Glenorchy speed trial event was repeated next year, he would return. The Glenorchy course was the scene last year of a New Zealand record of 33.5 knots from Auckland’s Kevin Trotter. However, a New Zealand record was set at the week-

end by a feUow Aucklander, Roger Tweddeil, with a speed Of 34.41 knots.

The top speeds were all recorded on Sunday, the final tday of the trials, after a two-

week absence of the usually prevailing north-westerly winds. Results:

Pascal Maka, 38.08 knots; Jean-Pierre Siret (New Caledonia), 35.79 knots; Roger Tweddeil (Auckland), 34.41 knots; Donald Shaw (Dunedin), 34.24 knots; Kevin Trotter (Auckland), 33.93 knots; Lee Fraser (Wellington), 33.41) Bryan Nieuwenhuyse (Queenstown), 33.38; Derek Stewart (Queenstown). 32.73 knots; Adrian Roper (Auckland), 32.66 knots; Ewan Rendall (Queenstown), 32.33 knots. t £
