Scott Base huskies fly to new home

Scott Base’s last 14 huskies will be in Christchurch today before flying out to their new home in the United States this evening. The huskies are due to arrive aboard the United States supply ship Greenwave which picked them up last Thursday and brought to an end 30 years use of the dogs at the base. The Greenwave is due at Lyttelton about 12.30 p.m. and the huskies might spend several hours in quarantine at Orana Park before boarding a flight to Los Angeles.

In the United States they will go to the Steger Outdoor Centre, in Ely, Minnesota, where they will be used for breeding and in field and expedition work.

Winter camps at the centre are held for young people, many of them physically handicapped, and the dogs are the main form of transport

The decision to withdraw the huskies from Antarctica was made last summer to cut costs and

out of concern for the seal population from which the dogs were fed. The introduction of

motorised toboggans meant the dogs were used only for recreation and short trips near Scott Base.
