Salmon rearing permits delayed

Wellington reporter

Thirty-five applications have been made for the sea-cage rearing of salmon — seven for farms at Port Underwood and five elsewhere in the Marlborough Sounds. Four hundred and twenty-eight cages have been indicated for Port Underwood and 144 for the rest of the Sounds. Of all the applications received, 26 have been with the Ministry of Fisheries for more than three months. The Minister of Fisher-

ies, Mr Moyle, said me

main problem delaying progress on these applications was the absence of sufficient information on the effects of salmon farming on the marine environment to enable him to make informed decisions on the applications. He expected to be able to decide on each of the applications by the end of April once his Ministry had completed its investigations into appropriate criteria for granting salmon farming licences.
