Test real thing for youth team

New Zealand will be concentrating on a much better performance in the first Youth cricket test against Australia at Hagley Oval today after two decisive losses in the oneday internationals.

Australia won the back-to-back limited-over games on Saturday and Sunday by 187 runs and seven wickets respectively. However, the New Zealand manager, Mr Haig Whiting, was unperturbed. “We’ll play the tests very much better than the one-dayers,” he said last evening.

While the Australian batting line-up seemed formidable in the one-day matches, Mr Whiting said that he would reserve judgment until the fourday matches were contested. The first of the three

four-day tests will begin at 11 a.m. today with 100 overs to be completed in the day. Further tests will be played in New Plymouth and Auckland. The New Zealand team will be selected from John Murtagh (captain), Rodney Brown, Shane Thomson, Brian Barrett, Mark Douglas, Lee Germon, Michael Lamont, Rob MacKinlay, Jonathan Millmow, Matthew O’Rourke, Henry Richards, Addie Somani.

The Australian XI will be selected from:

Geoff Parker (captain), Brett Williams, Greg Chambers, Stuart Law, Ken Healy, Lachlan Ferguson, Joe Scuderi, Aliester de Winter, Scott Prestridge, David Maidment, Adrian Tucker, Peter Sumich, Wayne Holdsworth, Craig McKissack.
