Man fined for using Royal seal

By

ROBIN CHARTERIS

in London

Cutting the Royal Seal from the side of cornflakes packet and copying it on to his stationery cost the owner of a Weston-Super-Mare car hire firm a court conviction and fine of £450 ($1260). John Wildy, aged 39, admitted using the: Queen’s official crest on a letter and receipt without official permission after a couple who hired one of his cars for a wedding reception complained to Tradings Standards officials. Under the crest of the letterhead of his company, Crown Royal Internation, were printed the worlds, “By Royal appointment — car hirers.” Mr Wildy told Bristol magistrates he did not realise the seal could be used only with special permission. He thought he could do so because he had once been given an official Buckingham Palace sticker when taking guests to a Royal party.
