Reilly expected to regain winning form tonight

Special correspondent Wellington The talented three-year-old, Reilly, should regain winning form when he races in the Cable Price Toyota Mobile Pace on the final night of the Wellington Harness Racing Club’s meeting at Hutt Park tonight. Reilly had not raced since November when he lined up on the first night of the meeting and returned a useful effort for eighth after starting from the second row. He showed big improvement on the second night, when just pipped by Winning Rose after again starting from the second line.

Tonight he has been favoured by a good draw and will start from No. 2. He should be further improved by Saturday’s run and be ready for a winning effort. The Smooth Fella colt is highly rated by his trainer, Les Purdon, who considers him a good prospect for Derby races later in the season.

He will be driven by Maurice McKendry, who hasn’t had much luck at the meeting to date, with only one winner on the first night. However, he is the leading driver at Hutt Park this season and looks to have two or three good prospects tonight. Brandy Row, a member of Ken Webber’s in-form team, looks a real danger after twq unlucky runs at the meeting. He finished powerfully for third on the first night after striking traffic problems, while on Saturday he was

pushed right back to near last with 350 m to run. He finished strongly down the outer and did well to get up for fourth. With better luck this time he should be right in the finish. Winning Rose produced a game effort to peg back Reilly on Saturday and another good draw should see her prominent again. Arabian Blue, the beaten favourite on the first two nights, has drawn the second row for the third time and once again has his work cut out. He also broke with 1400rn to run on Saturday, which did not assist his chances.

Revae is a likely improver, while Desmaid has returned two honest efforts.

The T.A.B. double will be completed by the $6OOO Lion Red Mile Pipe Opener Mobile Pace, a prelude to the rich Lion Red Mile at Alexandra Park in April. The mile is rarely run at Hutt Park these days, and it will be interesting to see what time is recorded. South Islander, Final Offer, which came north especially for the race, is obviously the one to beat from the No. 3 draw.

Suits Me has been racing soundly but starts from the second row, while Natural Magic and Tokyo Bay shouldn’t be far away. Na Doc has won two races at the meeting but has only beaten maiden horses and will find this a big step up. He has plenty of speed but an inability to begin quickly at the start will count against him.
