Oliver Reed under the influence?

NZPA-PA London Hundreds of viewers telephoned London Weekend Television with complaints after what appeared to be a drunken performance from the film star, Oliver Reed. The actor, renowned for his drunken antics, brought “Aspel and Co.” to a standstill. He came on the pre-recorded programme clutching a jug of orange juice and insisted on doing an unscheduled song and dance act with the band.

A network spokeswoman said: “It was difficult to tell what the song was. He had been drinking, there is no doubt about that.”

Viewers complained that Reed was incoherent throughout Friday night’s show, in which he was a guest with Clive James. James asked Reed why he drank and was told: “The best people are found in pubs.” Michael Aspel said later: “When you invite Oliver Reed you keep your eyes closed and your fingers crossed. “Interestingly, Oliver went away a happy man, believing he had done a good show.”
