Ramblers beat Auckland rivals
PA Auckland A slashing centre-field hit by Mark Brewer which scored two runners and a great reflex catch by the pitcher, Steve Jackson, gave Ramblers a 2-1 victory over their local rivals, Marist, in a national league softball match yesterday. The victory also brought Ramblers its sixth Auckland club title of the 1980 s. No run was scored until the final innings when tiebreaker base runner, Matt Dijak, and Rod Fowler were brought home by Brewer’s drive past the Marist pitcher, Mike Roberts. Bold pitching by the player-oFthe-day, Jackson, who took 12 strike-outs and brilliantly caught a fullblooded Danny Di Marzio drive, pevented Marist, upset 1-2 by visiting Mudgeway Wreckers (Hawke’s Bay) on Saturday, from equalising. Di Marzio pulled back the run for Marist at the bottom of the tenth, scoring on a fielder’s choice and passed ball. However, Fowler and Brewer pulled off a masterful play to dismiss the base runner, Anthony Laws, and, with two down, it was left to Jackson to strike out Stephen Roberts. Jackson had also. Won individual honours wm his in-
spirational batting and determined pitching in Rambler’s 3-0 win over Derori (North Shore) on Saturday. Johnsonville beat Pukekohe yesterday, 2-1, with Steve Workman batting in the winning run in the sixth innings. Johnsonville had proved just as indomitable the day before, maintaining constant pressure to score a 2-1 win over Fraser-Tech. Cardinals, Wellington adversaries Poneke-Kilbirnie, Ramblers and Hutt Valley Marist share top spot on the Lion Red points table after three week-ends of action. Cardinals continued an unbroken winning sequence with . wins against Pukekohe (3-1) and Fraser-Tec (6-0) at the week-end, while PonekeKilbirnie were clear-cut winners over United (Christchurch) and Demons (Southland) on a trip south, a route Hutt Valley Marist followed with equal success.
