Paddock landing

PA Wellington The pilot of a light aircraft was lucky to escape without injury yesterday after being forced to make an emergency landing in a paddock near Paraparaumu. The pilot, Mr Robin Gibbons, aged 70, of Eastbourne, Wellington, took off from Paraparaumu Airport in a plane towing a two-seater glider.

He had climbed to about 150 m when his plane started to lose power. Mr Gibbons released the tow rope and the glider and its passengers returned safely to the airfield. Meanwhile he selected

a paddock among sand dunes and made an emergency landing. Though the plane crashed into a fence it suffered only minor damage to the propeller and a panel. Mr Gibbons walked away uninjured, t An inspector of air accidents was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the power failure. Mr Gibbons said later that he had no time to pahic when he realised something was wrong. “There are homes in the area but I, know my way round out there and I came down in the only available paddock,” .he; said. - v ■
