Ambassadors appointed
PA Wellington A champion windsurfer, two top horsewomen and a Maori film expert were added to the list of sporting and cultural ambassadors yesterday by Minister of Recreation and Sport, Mr Moore. The former world champion windsurfer, Santha Patel, had been reappointed an honorary sport ambassador for another year because she had shown a high degree
of initiative in trade and tourism promotions, Mr Moore said. The world class equestrians, Tinks Pottinger, of Masterton, and Trudy Boyce, of Tokoroa, who will compete this year in England’s most prestigious horse trials of Badminton and Burghley, have also been appointed sport ambassadors.
The fourth ambassador is Mrs Witarina Harris, who recently received the Queen’s Service Medal for
Maori and community work. A kaumatua for the New Zealand Film Archive, Mrs Witarina will speak at the New Zealand Film Archive’s season in London, Paris and Munich in May. “An Ambassador is a title, similar to a ‘Made in New Zealand’ label, that displays excellence. The Sport and Cultural Ambassador Programme is an international showcase of New Zealand’s best and brightest,” Mr Moore said.
