Liquor licence needed
PA Auckland The Auckland Technical Institute is applying to have the first fully licensed catering college in New Zealand. The head of the catering department, Mr Ted Bryant, said it was hoped the liquor licence would be granted by the Licensing Control Commission by the end of next month.
He said the institute was making the application because the trend was for staff to serve both
food and wine, whereas six or eight years ago, food and wine were separate. Mr Bryant said about 20 people passed through the institute’s catering course each year. The licence was necessary for students to receive proper training and was something the school had been needing. Students would learn how to serve wines, and the backgrounds of different wines.
He said the institute was the first college to apply for a liquor licence. If it was successful, others might follow. Mr Bryant said the Health Department had already visited the catering department’s restaurant, L’Ecole, and visits from the Fire Service and police were expected. Mr Bryant was optimistic that the application would be granted.
