Life-savers’ dress-rehearsal
Canterbury surf life-savers had their dress-rehearsal for the New Zealand championships which will be held at New Plymouth in two weeks, at the K Cup carnival, the final meeting of the Canterbury season at Taylors Mistake yesterday. The Turpin Trophy, which is awarded to the club gaining the most points during the day, was won by the host club, Taylors Mistake, with 70 points, but they won only narrowly from South Brighton with 68 points. Anthony Doreen (South Brighton) comfortably won the open beach sprint, and he will be encouraged with his form as the national championships approach. The open six-man rescue and resuscitation was won by Taylors Mistake B, but the surprise was the competent South Brighton women’s team finishing second ahead of Taylors Mistake A.
North Beach A had a mixed day in the surf boat races, winning two heats but finishing third behind the club’s B crew and South Brighton in the other race. North Beach A should be one of the stronger crews at the national championships. The all-round strength of the Taylors Mistake club was emphasised in the Dearlove relay which it won comfortably from Waimairi, with North Beach third. North Beach had a successful competition and it finished third in the Turpin Trophy edging out Waimairi with 33 points. New Brighton could muster only 18 points. Geoff Walker (Waimairi) had a good tussle with Simon Davis (Taylor’s Mistake) before winning the surf ski race
and Lars Burner and Dave Conder gave Taylors Mistake first and second respectively, in the malibu board race. A South Brighton junior women’s six-place rescue and resuscitation team had the distinction of beating the junior boys’ team. Taylors Mistake won the event with the South Brighton junior women second just over a point ahead of the junior men’s team. South Brighton got the better of North Beach in the junior surf boat races with two firsts and a second. North Beach had two seconds and a first New Brighton’s swimming strength enabled it to take a comfortable win in the women’s surf relay. Helen Mahon (Taylors Mistake) won the beach sprint, the expected result, and Janice Beaumont (South Brighton) won the malibu board race comfortably.
