Big yacht fleet contests pennants
A fleet of 157 yachts contested the Canterbury Riccarton Estuary pennants in the largest turn-out of the season on the Estuary yesterday. Four classes with large squadrons turned out in the light north-easterly winds. The Zephyr class had 21 , craft, the P class with 18 a yachts, 15 Sunbursts, and 14 Sigrids sailed from their respective squadrons. In the Starling class, Mark Howell from the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club, sailing Exodus, continued his dominance in the class to record his third win in the four-race series with one race to sail. Howell leads Kevin O’Brien, of the Pleasant Point Yacht Club, in the class. O’Brien finished third in yesterday’s race and has second and third placings from
previous races. The former national Zephyr champion, John Morrison, won his class convincingly for his second win from the fast-improving Graeme Hare, at the helm of Bonnie, and the South Island champion Bill Beere in Echo.
The Pleasant Point Yacht Club helmsman, Craig Keenan, notched up his third win in his quest for a pennant in his catamaran Greased Lightnin to stave off a challenge from his clubmate, and South Island title-holder in the class, Craig Smith, on Summerlove, who has finished second to Keenan in the last three races.
