St Albans, Riccarton take first innings points

St Albans and Riccarton both recorded first innings points in the senior women’s cricket competition on Saturday.

The games had been severely affected by rain on the first day, only one hour of play being possible in the St Albans-Lancaster Park game and none at all in the Riccar-ton-Sydenham game.

In the match at Porritt Park between St Albans and Lancaster Park, Park resumed with its overnightscore at 15 for two to bat on to reach 60 for five before declaring 40min before lunch. Penny Kinsella played an anchor role for Park, scoring an unbeaten 19 and Rebecca Millichip hit an aggressive 20. St Albans struggled towards the first innings total against some excellent bowling by Millichip. Aided by a wicket showing variable bounce. Millichip had all the batsmen in trouble. St Albans declared immediately after passing the Park score.

However, as it had taken considerable time to score the runs it made it difficult for an outright result. Park in its second innings reached 55 for six before play was called off at 5.30. p.m. when there was no possibility of a result. Once again, Kinsella held the innings together. For St Albans Campbell exploited the turn in the track to claim five wickets, aided by some superb close-in catching by Kirsty Bond. Brigit Legg bowled an excellent spell, troubling all the batsmen with pace and movement.

It was much the same story at Sydenham Park with only first innings points being gained. Riccarton put Sydenham in to bat with Sydenham declaring on the loss of Anderson’s

wicket when the score was 62. Riccarton began the run chase to head Sydenham on the first innings and declared at 2.30 p.m., three wickets down. Looking for an outright win, Sydenham started badly in its second innings losing an early wicket. There were two good partnerships between Trudy Anderson and Vivienne Cowles and between Cowles and Maia Lewis. Lewis, in particular, played an attractive innings with Cowles playing an anchoring role, finishing unbeaten on 46 when the declaration came at 110 for three, leaving Riccarton 20 overs to score 103. Content with first innings points Riccarton batted through to score 55 for five, the highlight being two excellent catches in slips by Anderson and a well-com-piled 20 by Deborah Ford.
