Four outright cricket wins

All matches in the ninth round of the Christchurch Suburban Association’s senior A cricket competition on Saturday resulted in outright wins. The triumphant teams were Hornby, Heathcote, Upper Riccarton and Meri-vale-Papanui. Hornby has a two-point lead in the competition over Upper Riccarton, with Heathcote and Merivale-Papanui third and fourth, respectively. The other four sides. New Brighton, Hoon Hay, Southern Districts and Sumner, are out of contention. Hornby easily accounted for Southern Districts at Denton Oval. Southern needed 155 runs to win In lOOmin and 20 overs, but it was dismissed for 95, Barry Adam doing the main damage with five for 39. Hoon Hay was another team to collapse. It needed 174 for victory after Upper Riccarton, which met with four run outs, had been dismissed for 176. After a sound start, Hoon Hay was bundled out for 115 as Dave Kennedy and Wayne Stapley wreaked havoc with their bowling. An unbroken fifth-wicket partnership between Robert Hay, whose 58 not out was the best score of the day, and David Ward, secured victory for Heathcote against New Brighton at Heathcote Domain.

New Brighton scored 138 in its second innings, Ross Cooper, Derek Burrell and Roger Hemingsway providing the bulk of the runs, and Michael Shrimpton, aged 16, taking four for 17 in his senior debut Heathcote lost four early wickets, but Hay and Ward took their team to victory. Sumner failed in its reasonable chase of 106 runs against Merivale-Papanui at St Leonard’s Square. After dismissing the combined team for 111,
