Australian Youth XI thrashes N.Z.
The cream of New Zealand’s young cricketing talent was well and truly whipped by an aggressive, confident Australian Youth XI on Saturday in the first of its one-day internationals at Lancaster Park.
The New Zealand Under-20 side could manage only a halting 105 for eight from its 51 overs in reply to the massive 292 for three by Australia. The star of the match was the New South Wales opening batsman, Brett Williams, who batted throughout the Australian innings to remain unbeaten on 134, scored from 150 balls. Williams shared an opening partnership of 129 with Greg Chambers, helped his captain, Geoff Parker, to rattle on 108 in 64 minutes and further tormented the New Zealanders in a stand of 55 in 33 minutes with Ken Healy. Ominously for New Zealand’s future prospects, its leading bowlers, Brian Barrett and Jonathan Millmow, were mauled by Williams and his colleagues. Barrett conceded 71 runs from nine overs and Millmow was taken out of the attack after six overs went for 42 runs. Canterbury’s Henry Richards was the most economical bowler with one for 42 from his 11 overs. New Zealand struggled
from the start of its innings when Michael Lamont and Mark Douglas were both run out for ducks. The home batsmen were never allowed to relax from the lively Australian bowling and fielding, and there were two further run outs as the side limped to 68 for seven shortly after half-way. Canterbury’s Lee Germon at least helped deny Australia the satisfaction of bowling New Zealand out as he fought for iy 2 hours to remain unbeaten on 14. New Zealand's top scorer was the Auckland opener, Rob Mac Kinlay, who was fifth out for 29, scored from 76 balls. Scores:—
