Port Hills
Sir,—The article in “The Press” a few weeks back, “Mt Cavendish’s value noted,” brings home strongly reasons why we do not want further desecration in the Mt Cavendish reserve area of the Port Hills — or in any part of them. Our benefactor, the late Hon. H. G. Eli;s Summit Road set out a pattern for further development that is hard to beat, surely — a road fine and functional and totally in keeping where unemployed (used during the slump of the 19305) unearthed burnt native timber, showing native bush grew naturally here at some time and still does in small pockets. Now we have acres and acres of fireprone pine and house developcause run-off of precious
soil cover in times of flood, and a neglected and misused Bridle - Path. Are we beneficiaries of Harry Ell’s good work doing our job? — Yours, etc.,
