Law and order
Sir,—Mr Bolger’s platform on law and order includes an increase in police numbers, while it is admitted that cuts in other areas may be needed to do this. An increase in the police will result in a higher rate of apprehension of offenders, placing a greater strain on our already over-worked court system and Probation Service. A final consequence will be an increase in the numbers so expensively detained. If Mr Bolger intends bringing more “offenders” to justice then he needs to increase the resources of those services which administer this justice. While it is the police who apprehend offenders it is the justice system that has responsibility for stopping re-offending. Increasing police numbers is a popular political platform, but is based on a myth that this alone will make our communities safer. — Yours, etc.,
ALAN J. ROGERS. February 19, 1987.
