East and West
Sir, — Those who by ignorance or design, champion the ideology of the Soviet Union, perpetrate the myth that it is the will of the Russian people, and all is well. Genuine concern for the Russian people must manifest itself by constant criticism of an iniquitous system that provides luxury living and power for a select few. By contrast, the deplorable living conditions of the people attest to the futility and injustice of a system in force for over 60 years. The "Reader’s Digest” does not criticise the Russian people, only those in power who subject the people to tyranny and dictatorship. Those who prefer to stifle the truth are not friends of the Russian people. Churchill once said: “Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.” It is to be hoped that truth will eventually unravel that mystery, and the freedom of its people will cause communism to subvert itself. — Yours, etc.,
BILL BARRY. February 16, 1987.
