‘Some disagreement on economic policy’

Some of the 100 or so employees of C.W.F. Hamilton, Ltd, did not totally agree with the Government’s economic policies outlined to them yesterday by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Caygill

About 86 of the workers have recently been made redundant because of a downturn in the firm’s business and Mr Caygill was invited by the union to speak to workers about Government economic policy.

Mr Caygill spoke for about 35 minutes and then answered several questions, said the Engineers’ Union Canterbury branch

secretary. Mr Bob Todd. “His address and answers still leave several queries in my mind which I want to follow up when he meets union and employer executives in Christchurch on March 4,” Mr Todd said. "Mr Caygill outlined some of the Government trainee schemes, the need for diversification to help generate jobs, and the need for people to learn new skills in order to find jobs.”

The March 4 meeting is expected to focus on the future of manufacturing, particularly engineering, in Canterbury. _ .
