Polytechnic to teach trade skills
PA Wellington Wellington Polytechnic will pilot one of the country’s first four parallel trade-training schemes in April.
The polytechnic will run a two-year automotive engineering course for 15 students, while a carpentry course will be run in Gisborne, a plumbing training scheme in Christchurch, and a fitting, turning and machinery course will be held at Manukau Technical Institute in Auckland.
The aim of the Wellington course is to train people who cannot get apprenticeships in automotive engineering. The polytechnic’s assistant principal, Mr Terry Kelly, said the course would cover the same work as an apprenticeship, but in much shorter time.
