Over rate fears come to nought
Dire predictions that the West Indian bowling rate would dip close to-a single-figure number of overs per hour were not substantiated yesterday. The rate was certainly not of dizzy proportions, but varied between 12 and 16 throughout the day, finally settling at 13.5.
It would have been markedly better had Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Courtney Walsh not delivered 23 no-balls. Only two of them were scored from.
There were also delays at the start of each session, totalling nine minutes, as either fieldsmen or batsmen were slow to resume.
But 81 overs was only three fewer than a Pakistan team which relied as much on spin as speed was required to achieve in a day two years ago, doing so only with considerable difficulty.
