NEW ZEALAND/CHINA STUDENT EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are offered each year for study in China under the New Zealand/China Student Exchange Scheme. These scholarships are normally for two years. Students with no previous Chinese language will usually study at the Peking Languages Institute for the first year. Others, and second year students, will be offered specialist courses either at the Institute or at universities or other appropriate institutions. The electives normally available are in the fields of Chinese language, history, philosophy, literature, political economy and archaeology. The Chinese academic year begins in late September and students will normally be expected to arrive in Peking by the middle of that month. Applicants should be permanent residents of New Zealand who are adaptable and mature. The awards are likely to be of most interest to graduates or under-graduates about to complete degrees. Some proven language ability, or a background in Asian studies, would be an advantage. A prime qualification would be the intention of pursuing a career in New Zealand to which study in China is relevant. It is not possible for successful applicants to be accompanied by spouses or families. Further information, and application forms may be obtained from the North Asian Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Private Bag, Wellington, or from the University Grants Committee Scholarships Committee, P O Box 12-348, Wellington North. Auckland residents may contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Auckland. All applications should be sent to the University Grants Committee by 31 March. HRAB733
