Project to review all Wellington transport
PA Wellington A $2 million review of transport in the Wellington region, including road, rail, sea and air, may be undertaken by the Wellington Regional Council. Plans for the project have been approved by the council’s transport services committee.
Funding would be sought from the National Roads Board — which had already indicated it could come up with 30 per cent — and other groups. At least half could
be rated for. The transport manager, Dr David Watson, said major highways would not be upgraded unless some planning was done. .
The council’s chairman, Mr Stuart Macaskill, said the . credibility of the council rested on whether it decided to take up the challenge. “The National Roads Board is not going to approve any more major projects in the Wellington Region until we have got the ’job done,” he said.
