15-year disqualification

NZPA staff correspondent Sydney A leading Australian racehorse trainer was disqualified for 15 years by Western Australian Turf Club stewards, after two of his horses were found doped with “ele-

phant juice” last month. The Perth trainer, George Way, was found guilty of improper practice and failing to take proper precautions. He was disqualified for five years for allegedly possessing an illegal battery device, and 10 years on a charge arising from two positive swabs taken from Hollydoll Girl after she won at Ascot on January 26 and 31.

W.A.T.C. stipendiary stewards’ chairman, Mr John Mahoney, said a further inquiry into a positive swab taken from Brash Son, owned by millionaire Laurie Connell, would be held tomorrow.

The two horses were the first to have been found to have been doped with the potent stimulative drug etorphine, commonly known as elephant juice. Hollydoll Girl is owned by the W.A.T.C. chairman, Mr John Roberts, who gave evidence at the inquiry. Way has publicly stated his innocence and claimed he had been set up.
